Getting Your Texas Driver’s License: An Overview

In Texas, the process of getting a driver’s license can be broken down into two phases: Learner’s License and Provisional Driver License. Here’s a simplified breakdown to get you started:

Texas learner license

The learner’s license, also known as a learner’s permit, is your first official step towards becoming a licensed driver on Texan roads. It’s designed to be a supervised learning period, allowing you to practice driving under the guidance of a licensed adult before taking the road solo.

There are two requirements for obtaining the learner license:

  • You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s license in Texas.
  • You’ll need to have completed either the first 6 hours of classroom instruction from a Texas-approved Driver’s Education course (concurrent method) or the entire 32-hour classroom portion (block method).

To obtain this license, enroll in a Texas-approved Driver’s Education course and complete the required classroom portion (either the first 6 hours or all 32 hours, depending on your chosen method). Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate of completion known as DE-964.

After that, you’ll have to take a written knowledge exam that tests your understanding of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. Passing the exam will hand you a provisional license.

Provisional driver’s license

The provisional driver’s license in Texas is the next step after acquiring your learner’s permit. It allows you more independence behind the wheel but comes with certain restrictions designed to ensure safe driving habits are instilled before graduating with a full license.

You need to finish the remaining portion (or the entire course if you opted for the concurrent method) of the Texas-approved Driver’s Education program, including a minimum of 30 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving instructor.

You’ll also have to complete the free, two-hour online Impact Texas Teen Driver Program, which educates young drivers on the dangers of distracted driving and risky behaviors.

After your provisional license in Texas, you’ll finally graduate with a full driver’s license!

Online Courses to Kickstart Your Licensing Journey

When your parents were of your age, the only option they had was to travel down to an institute, sit in a boring classroom, consume slides, return home, and repeat the process for weeks to get their license.

But thankfully, you have an upgrade. You have online courses to help you speed up the process without leaving your couch.

Anyone with an internet connection can take up Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) approved courses and start their licensing journey. In Texas, where temperatures can reach the mid-90s to the low 100s, online courses offer unmatched convenience and safety.

So no need to worry about fixed class schedules or commuting to a physical location. Online education makes learning accessible to everyone, regardless of geographical limitations.

Texas Teen Driver’s Ed Online Course

If you’re under the age of 15 and want to secure a learner’s license, you need to take our Texas Driver’s Ed for teens. The online course is comprehensive and covers all components required by the TDLR. Moreover, it is specifically designed for teens who want to learn to drive without the assistance of their parents.

There are two phases involved:

32 hours of online classwork

A comprehensive online driver’s education course should cover a range of topics to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for safe driving. You can expect all the topics covered in our online course. From understanding the traffic laws and signs to a brief overview of the vehicle operations, you’ll be equipped with the necessary knowledge to clear the written exam.

The online course material is based largely on the official Texas Driver Handbook. But in addition to the information covered in the handbook, you’ll get knowledge on how to become a better driver.

Our course is everything you need to clear the first phase successfully. You’ll receive the permit certificate within 1-2 hours of course completion. The certificate will be mailed to your registered email address, which you can print out.

14 hours behind the driving

The second phase is the 14-hour behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor. This is after you pass the DPS written exam and obtain your provisional license.

The second phase will enable you to gain practical knowledge on how to handle a vehicle on the road and how to drive safely. With a specialist by your side, you can get all your intriguing questions answered. You can also engage in role-play sessions and learn how to handle a vehicle in specific situations.

Please note that Driving Quest is not a registered driving school. Thus, we do not offer behind-the-wheel training. You need to get in touch with a local driving school to gain practical experience.

24/7 access anytime, anywhere

One of the prime benefits of online courses is you can access the course material anytime, 24/7. So if you have extra classes in summer, you can attend those without compromising on the driving lessons. Likewise, if you have a night out planned with your pals, you can take the courses in the morning,

This added flexibility allows you to complete the course and get your learner’s license within your planned timeframe. State laws allow teens to complete a maximum of 2 hours of course material per day. Thus, you can pace your study and obtain a license as per your desired timeframe.

Driving With a Provisional License in Texas

While you can get a learner’s license as early as 15 years of age, you still need to wait till you turn 18 to get a full driver’s license. Till then, you will have to drive with a provisional license.

These come with restrictions, which you must be aware of as a responsible driver. Some of them are:

  • Passenger restrictions

You can only have one passenger under the age of 21 in the vehicle with you at any given time. This limitation helps to minimize distractions and allows you to focus on safe driving, especially during the initial learning phase. Immediate family members (parents, siblings, etc.) are exempt from this restriction and can ride along without counting towards the passenger limit.

  • Curfew

Provisional license holders under 18 cannot operate a motor vehicle between midnight and 5:00 am unless they have a valid reason. Some valid reasons include traveling to or from work, participating in a school-related activity, and responding to a medical emergency.

  • Cell Phone Use

Distracted driving is a major safety concern, so using a cell phone (including hands-free devices) is prohibited while driving with a provisional license. This restriction emphasizes the importance of staying focused on the road and minimizes distractions. Exceptions are made only for emergencies, such as dialing 911 for help.
